Writing A Story, The “Show Don’t Tell” Way
Anyone who has ever wanted to write or tried writing has probably heard the advice, “Show Don’t Tell.” The “Show Don’t Tell” advice is probably the type of advice which can always be heard by all of the writers no matter how long they have been writing. Even those who aren’t writing may have probably heard about the said advice, however, they do not really know what it means in writing.
We would opt to summarize something that we would want to say to other people. For example, we might say, “I bought a new bed today.” But in case that you wanted to let the people show what you bought, you will probably dig into details. In this case, we would explain how we decided we needed a new bed because the old one’s mattress was sagging. Apart from the reason why you bought a new bed, you may have probably explained how you went to different mattress stores just to choose the best one after you have compared them by lying down on it. Apart from explaining how you went to the store where you bought the new bed, you will even explain how you compared the different prices of mattresses and beds and how the salesman helped you in choosing the best mattress that would best suit your needs. Then we relate what happened when the new bed was delivered. We convey our excitement over a new bed, and we conclude with the end result-the good night’s sleep we experienced, or perhaps, we did not sleep so well and we tell why. Buying a new bed does not sound exciting, but it can become a humorous and even adventurous story if we do a good job of showing instead of telling.
The may of showing the story will always matter whether it is a fictional story or a non-fictional story. If you happen to be a writer and writes fictional or even non-fictional stories, it is really important that you know how to show it, not just how to tell it to your readers. It is really important to write a good non-fictional story, not just the fictional one since it is the type of story where the readers can be able to connect it with their lives since it is more relatable to them.
A non-fiction story is usually achieved with the help of self-help style. Other forms of non-fiction such as history or biography obviously require storytelling, but many types of non-fiction may not come to mind immediately as in need of storytelling. It is advisable to tell a good story, since most of us would love to hear it.
In this example, we’ll assume you’re writing a self-help book, the modern day version of “How to Win Friends and Influence People.” It is important to show to the story how you are interested in helping other people and how you are interested to listen to them.
